“Vegetarian” and “vegan” get used interchangeably a lot, but on an Indian menu they’re genuinely different filters — a vegetarian dish can still be built around ghee, cream, or paneer. Masala Dosa’s menu tags items as “Vegan” at the dish level, which means we can give you an exact list instead of a general assurance. Here’s precisely what’s vegan, category by category, sourced directly from the current menu.
Appetizers: Mostly Vegan, With One Notable Exception
Vegan-tagged: Samosa ($6.89), Pakora ($6.89), Papadum ($3.18), Eggplant Pakora ($8.48), Idly ($8.48), Fried Idly ($8.48), Medu Vada ($8.48), Sambar Vada ($8.48), Lentil Soup ($5.30), Sambar Soup ($5.30), and House Salad ($6.36).
Not vegan: Ghee Sambar Idly ($8.48) — the name gives it away, but it’s easy to glance past next to the plain Idly and Fried Idly, which are vegan. Chicken Pakora and the Tandoori Appetizers platter are also not vegan.
Dosa: Six of Nine Are Vegan
Vegan-tagged: Masala Dosa, Mysore Masala Dosa, Paper Masala Dosa, Spring Dosa, Spinach Masala Dosa, and Mushroom Masala Dosa, all $16.96.
Not vegan: Egg Masala Dosa (egg) and Seekh Kabab Masala Dosa (meat) are gluten-free but not vegan. Chilli Cheese Masala Dosa is not vegan either, due to the melted cheese. Our full dosa breakdown covers what makes each of these nine dishes different.
Uthappam: Five of Eight Are Vegan
Vegan-tagged: Mix Vegetables Uthappam, Onion and Chilli Uthappam, Onion and Pea Uthappam, Tomato and Pea Uthappam, and Spicy Gobi Uthappam, all $16.96.
Not vegan: Paneer and Pea Uthappam (paneer), Seekh Kabab Uthappam (meat), and Chicken Uthappam (meat) are gluten-free but not vegan.
Vegetable Curries: Read the Names Carefully
Vegan-tagged: Dal, Chana Masala, Aloo Jeera, Bhindi Masala, Vegetable Jalfrezi, Baigan Bharta, and Aloo Gobi — all $13.78–$14.84.
Not vegan, despite sounding plant-based: Aloo Mutter, Aloo Palak, Mushroom Palak, and Navratan Korma all lack a vegan tag on our menu, which typically signals a ghee- or cream-based preparation. Paneer Tikka Masala, Mutter Paneer, Palak Paneer, and Paneer Tikka Korma are all vegetarian but built around paneer, so they’re not vegan either. If you’re strictly vegan, stick to the seven tagged dishes above rather than assuming based on the vegetable in the name.
Breads and Sides
Chapatti ($3.18) is the only bread tagged vegan on our menu — Naan and its variations are not tagged vegan, likely due to ghee brushing during preparation, so ask staff before ordering if you want plain bread. On the side-order list, Rice ($3.71), Onion Salad ($3.18), Pickles ($2.65), and Mango Chutney ($2.65) are all vegan-tagged; Raita is a yogurt-based dip and is not.
Biryani, Desserts, and Beverages: Where to Be Careful
Vegetable Biryani ($14.84) is marked gluten-free on our menu but doesn’t carry an explicit vegan tag — biryani preparations sometimes include ghee, so ask when ordering if you need it strictly vegan.
None of our desserts — Kheer, Gulab Jaman, Carrot Halwa, Mango Ice Cream, or Kulfi — carry a vegan tag; all are dairy-based. There’s currently no vegan dessert on the menu.
On beverages, Mango Lassi is yogurt-based and not vegan, and Chai is traditionally dairy-based as well. Lemonade, Mango Juice, Ice Tea, Soda, Tea, and the bottled/sparkling waters are plant-based by nature, though our menu doesn’t carry a formal vegan tag on the beverage list — confirm with staff if you want certainty on preparation.
A Simple Vegan Order to Start With
A solid, fully vegan-tagged meal: Samosa or Idly to start, Masala Dosa or Chana Masala with Chapatti as your main, and Rice or Onion Salad on the side. It’s a complete, satisfying plate built entirely from dishes our own menu marks vegan — no substitutions required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Masala Dosa’s Masala Dosa actually vegan?
A: Yes — the classic Masala Dosa is tagged both gluten-free and vegan on our menu.
Q: What’s the difference between vegetarian and vegan on your menu?
A: Vegetarian dishes may still include dairy, ghee, or paneer — like Palak Paneer or Navratan Korma. Vegan-tagged dishes contain none of those and are marked explicitly on our menu.
Q: Are your desserts vegan?
A: No. Kheer, Gulab Jaman, Carrot Halwa, Mango Ice Cream, and Kulfi are all dairy-based, and none carry a vegan tag currently.
Q: Is naan vegan?
A: Naan is not tagged vegan on our menu, likely due to ghee used in preparation. Chapatti is our only vegan-tagged bread.
Q: Is Mango Lassi vegan?
A: No, Mango Lassi is a yogurt-based drink. Lemonade, Mango Juice, and iced tea are plant-based options to consider instead.
Q: What’s a good fully vegan meal to order?
A: Samosa or Idly as a starter, Masala Dosa or Chana Masala as your main with Chapatti, and Rice or Onion Salad on the side — all vegan-tagged on our menu.
